NEWS FROM THE MAYOR

PARENTS!!

Please talk to your children about the proper use of our city park. The picnic tables are not skate board ramps, the restrooms are not play areas. Trash needs to be put in the trash cans, not on the ground. If you see vandalism or improper behavior, please call City Hall during business hours or Linda at 712-946-7700 after hours. We have a beautiful park, let's work together to keep it that way.

Mother Nature is doing her best to keep us all hydrated! But, it really isn't working so well for our projects this summer. The water main project has seen numerous delays and the forecast isn't very promising for this week. Water services along Lakeport Street have yet to be hooked up to the main and there is still some cement to be poured for driveways, etc. The parking areas will probably be seeded sometime in September - here's hoping that Mother Nature will save a little reain for that.

The City Council was notified last month athat an additional grant of $80,000 (I-Jobs) will go towards our lift station project. This project is already partially funded by ARRA (American Recovery and Reinvestiment Act) funds in the amount of $100,720. The lift station is scheduled to be replaced this fall -- again, it's all up to you-know-who!!

Mayor Linda M. Cox

GARBAGE RATES

The City Council has agreed to increase garbage rates to offset increases from the Woodbury County Landfill. The cost for monthly pickup will be raised by $0.95. The charge for small cans will be $16.55 and large cans will be $18.20.

KEEPING LAGOONS HEALTHY

Lagoon systems are poind-like bodies of water that hold and treat wastewater. Lagoons are constructed and lined with matrial, such as clay, that will prevent leaks to the groundwater below. While in the lagoon, wastewater receives treatment through a combination of physical, biological and chemical processes. Much of the treatment occurs by utilizing sunlight, wind, algae, bacteria and microscopic organisms to naturally treat the wastewater. Just think of it as on BIG recycling unit for 14 million gallons of water annually.

You can help keep our lagoon system healthy by NOT flushing the following items: Coffee grounds, dental floss, disposable diapers, kitty litter, sanitary napkings, tampons, cigarette butts, condoms, fat, grease, oil, or paper towels or hazardous chemicals, such as pharmceuticals, paints, varnishes, thinners, waste oils or pesticides. These items can overtax or destroy the biological digestion taking place within the City's lagoon system.

STORM DRAINS

Storm water drains have been cleaned and vacacuumed out - at a cost of around $1,500. So as to avoid future problems, please keep grass clippings and other debris from collecting in the streets or alleys. You can help by mowing your grass so that the clippings are directed into your yard instead of the street.
