News & Announcements February 2010
Snow and Ice
Living in Iowa, we all know how uppredictable our weather can be. Our average annual snowfall is 32.7 inches and we normally experience three or four ice storms during the winter months.
During a winter storm, the city crew gets an early start by first removing snow from the main streets in order to get workers to their jobs, and to maintain emergency routes. Then, we concentrate on removing snow from the rest of the streets in town. Alley ways are next - we are awary that many of our residents use the alleys everyday.
To help our snow crew, residents are asked to find off-street parking as soon as possible when snow begins to accumulate. Equipment operators often work 12 or more hours in a shift, and appreciate getting through the streets as fast as possible. They need access to the whole street, otherwise a bank of snow may be left around vehicles. This not oly makes it difficult to maneuver, but also necessitates making another trip with the maintainer when the vehicle is eventually moved.
Snow and ice must be pushed as close to the curb as possible (using the parking as storage for the snow), thus unfortunately rolling snow into the ends of driveways.
Also, residents should not push snow and ice onto the traveled portion of a street , alley or sidewalk.
